A 22-year-old Nigerian man has been charged with killing his 22-year-old friend, Brian Njoku, identified as Ofon Phillip Idiong.
The deceased owed $40(N15k) to the perpetrator and allegedly attempted to pay via an online banking site, but the money started to return to his account.
Ofon picked up Brian and they went to the house of a mutual friend at 8811 Gustine Street, to see a basketball match on Monday, September 7,2020, according to sources.
Brian tried to clarify the situation, but the perpetrator asked for his money. There was an altercation and Ofon pulled out a pistol and shot him.
Patrol officers from the Houston Police Department rushed to a shooting call at the crime scene and discovered Brian recovering from bullet wounds, according to City of Houston News. They delivered first aid and hurried him immediately to the Hermann Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The offender left the scene initially but returned, and was questioned by police officers from Houston. He was prosecuted later on for his involvement in the death of Njoku.
The Houston Police Department wrote in a statement posted on its website: "Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of a man at 8811 Gustine Lane that occurred about 10:30 p.m. on Monday (September 7).
"The suspect, Ofon Phillip Idiong (b/m, 22), is charged with murder in the 337th State District Court. A booking photo of Idiong is attached to this news release.
"The victim, Brian Njoku, 22, was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
"The security guard stated that prior to the shooting Njoku and another man were overheard arguing in front of the apartment. " the state read
