So desperate for a son was an Indian man who had five daughters that he reportedly broke open the abdomen of his pregnant wife to decide their child's gender.
The man, identified as Pannalal,43, assaulted his wife, Anita Devi, 35, with a sharp-edged weapon at their home in Budaun in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday night, September 19, The Times of India reported.
In a critical case, she was rushed to a hospital in Bareilly. Her baby in the womb was unhurt, but due to serious injury and heavy bleeding from the attack, Anita 's health worsened.
Civil Lines Police Station SHO, Sudhakar Pandey, confirming the attack, said that the man got into an argument with his partner, who is six to seven months pregnant, for fear that a girl will also be their next child.
"A priest had expected that a baby would be their sixth child as well. Pannalal then assaulted Anita with a sickle on her belly after she refused to have an abortion to kill the fetus."
Their neighbours arrived at the scene and, the police said, rushed Anita to the district hospital.
The SHO told the newspaper that the woman's husband was arrested after the assault.
"We have detained the accused and he is being questioned," Sudhakar said while adding that they are waiting for a written complaint from the woman's family to register a case.
Anita's younger brother, Ravi Kumar said, "My brother-in-law used to beat up my sister often for giving birth to five daughters. Even my parents tried to resolve the problem, but no one had ever imagined that he would take such a cruel step."
