The Kainji Hydroelectric Dam has experienced a sudden burst that in some Nigerian states could lead to blackouts, Daily Times has gathered.

The Kainji Dam embankments, one of Nigeria's hydro-power plants, caved in after the four spillway gates were opened to release excess water caused by heavy rains.

The administration, Standard Energy Solution Limited, opened the dots on Sunday but noticed that the dam impounded more water than it was expected to.

"Because of the water pressure, we have opened the 4 spillway gates. Now it enters the embarkment and if not strengthened it will begin to extend. The embarkation is plummeting, rocks are dropping into the sea, "an official said.

The dam, which generates hydroelectric electricity, is situated in Niger State's New Bussa town in Borgu Local Government District.

Authorities and the corporation have shut down the hydro-power station for maintenance and will pull off the national grid about 760MW of electricity.

Abdulrasaq Jakada, a top official of the Emir of Borgu’s palace said the monarch has been informed of the development.
